Shadowlands と Oxford （1996年の旅）　[本と映像・音楽の話] [編集]

　Richard Attenborough氏が今年8月、90歳で亡くなられました。"Jurassic Park" (1993年公開)で俳優として子供のような心を持った大人の姿を演じられたのも記憶にありますが、"Gandhi" （1982年公開）の製作・監督としてその名前を最初に記憶しました。そして私の最も好きな映画は氏の"Shadowlands"（1993年公開、邦題『永遠の愛に生きて』）です。36型のHi-Visionテレビ 36D3000 （TOSHIBA）が住処にやってき、大画面と繊細な画が嬉しくてNHKのBS Hi-Visionの映画放送を、番組表をチェックしては見ていました。そしてAnthony Hopkins とDebra Winger共演によるC.S. LewisとJoy Davidmanの愛を描いたこの作品に出合いました（C.S. LewisとJoy Davidmanのリンク先を読むと映画をより深く理解できますが、映画を観てから読むことをお勧めします）。
　この映画、放送時にS-VHSで録画しましたが、126minの作品で2時間テープしか手元になく、長時間録画の設定としたため、画質的に満足できませんでした。そして「DVDは出ていないかなあ」と思い出す度にamazonでチェックしていましたが、同時期に公開のAnthony Hopkins とEmma Thompson共演の"The Remains of the Day"（1993年公開、邦題『日の名残り』）はDVD化されているのに、"Shadowlands"のDVDは登場しませんでした。Attenborough氏の逝去で"Shadowlands"のことを思い出し、久し振りにamazonでチェックしたところ、輸入品で「言語：英語、字幕：英語」とするDVDが見つかりました。「リージョンなどの記述はないけれど住処で見られるかな・・」と少し気になりましたが、発送元を米国とする出品者もあり、「リージョンフリー化したDVDプレーヤーDV-220Vもあるし、大丈夫だろう」で注文し、DVDが届きました。その裏面には"Distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment (UK)"と英国のDVDであることがわかりました。そしてDV-220Vで、また、私のメインで使用のPC（OS: Windows 7 Ultimate）で問題なく、再生できました。問題は私の英語のリスニング能力のみ・・ (^_^;
